Jay Jones’ Statement on New Lawsuit Against the Trump Administration Unlawfully Freezing Funding for After-School Programs

July 14, 2025

Norfolk, VA – Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Virginia Jay Jones today released the following statement after more than 20 attorneys general nationwide sued the Trump administration for unlawfully freezing after-school and summer program funding:

“Once again, Jason Miyares has refused to stand up for Virginia families – skipping out on another critical lawsuit at the expense of thousands of Virginia students to appease Donald Trump.

“By freezing over $6 billion in funds for after-school and summer programs, the Trump administration is not just playing politics – it is punishing children, especially those from low-income and rural communities. But after his consistent efforts to dismantle the Department of Education, this is no surprise – nor is Jason Miyares’ choice to align with MAGA extremism over doing what’s best for Virginia kids.

“It should go without saying: our children’s education is not political, and taking away resources from low-income families who struggle to find affordable, quality childcare is just wrong. As a father of two young boys, I know how important these programs are, and as Attorney General, I will always put Virginia families first in protecting the critical programs and resources that they rely on.”
